Is Clean Beauty Still a Thing?

The clean beauty and the overall cosmetic industry is a continually growing one, with lots of surprises, innovations and trends, making it difficult to tell what will be the talk of the town in days, months or years from now.  While we envisage what is to come in the future, let’s talk about what’s hot in the beauty industry for now, shall we?

“Clean beauty” is the latest buzzword and new movement that has taken over the cosmetic industry. This is evident by how fast it is becoming mainstream and gaining more popularity among beauty product enthusiasts.

What does Clean Beauty Mean?

What exactly are cleaner beauty products and what does it mean? Why has this trend been on the rise and never seem to be fading away anytime soon?

Although the term “clean beauty” doesn’t seem to have a universal, legal, or official definition, brands in the beauty niche have come up with a variety of explanations that fit their agendas.  In a neutral sense, clean beauty is about beauty products that are free from harmful chemicals, healthy, and only made from safe and clean ingredients.

While brands claimed that beauty products with natural, organic and green labels are made from 100% natural ingredients, which is not totally true, clean beauty products introduced a new perspective. “Clean” is not about making beauty products that are 100% natural, but products free from the most common toxins in our skincare, body, beauty and hygiene products.

This means that there are still going to be man-made ingredients, synthetics, and even preservatives, as the stability of the formulation needs to be maintained. But, as long as these ingredients are non-toxic and confirmed to have no harmful side effects, they can serve as the formula for these beauty products.

Transparency

You have natural, or organic written on your favorite beauty product doesn’t mean that it is free from allergens, hormone disruptors, irritants, carcinogens. This is called “greenwashing” for people who are familiar with the beauty and cosmetic niche. They put it right in your face with big, colorful, bold letters that the product is 100% natural, which doesn’t make you bother about going through the ingredients. The label reads Organic anyway, so it has to be! But that’s never the case.

Transparency is another important factor that has set cleaner beauty products apart from other products in the cosmetic industry. While other brands who claim to be making only organic products are hiding the toxic ingredients under pseudonyms such as “fragrances” and so on, cleaner beauty products spell out their incorporated ingredients.

With the concept of sustainability and safety, these cleaner beauty products have become mainstream, are on the rise, and may not be a fad that gets short-lived when new trends emerge.
